USA/Canada Region

The mission of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of Mercy Sisters to the United States began in 1992 through the invitation of the then Local Ordinary, Archbishop Edward McCarthy, the Archbishop of Miami, Florida. In response to this invitation our then Superior General, Late Rev. Mother Mary Paul Offiah sent twelve (12) sisters who we symbolically called "the Twelve Apostles". The sisters were Sr. Chidi Nwanya, Sr. Nkechinyere Njoku, Sr. De Lourdes Dike, Sr. Camillus Ononuju (RIP), Sr. Evangeline Nnorom (RIP), Sr. Ogechi Nzurike, Sr. Daniel Ike, Sr. Magdalene Mkpo, Sr. Regina Osondu, Sr. Ngozidilichukwu Ohaeri, Sr. Stella Chinalum Ikeadighi and Sr. Chiazokam Ezeorah. In 1994, the Local Ordinary of Mobile Archdiocese in Alabama, Archbishop Oscar Lipscomb invited our sisters to serve in two elementary schools in the diocese - Resurrection Catholic School in Montgomery and Mother Mary School in Phenix City. Sister Eugenia Ugbogu (RIP), Sr. Obioma Osueke, Sr. Jennifer Maris Otuonye, and Sr. Lucia Odor served at Resurrection Catholic School while Sister Monica Okeke, Sr. Rosita Ofordum and Sr. Bellarmine Ezumah served at Mother Mary School. In 1994 also, Bishop Jude Speyrer, the first Bishop Emeritus of Lake Charles, Louisiana, the late Msgr. Irving DeBlanc, and Msgr. Joseph Bourque visited the Umuahia Diocese in Nigeria during the time of Sr. Prudentia Osuji, who was the Superior in charge of the sisters. A year after the visit (1995), Msgr. Irving DeBlanc invited our sisters to the Lake Charles diocese for a mission to work with the sick, the poor, the needy, and particularly with the elderly. Several sisters were sent to respond to that missionary call. After this, several other Sisters arrived through the connection of Late Mother Paul Offiah at the invitation of various Bishops.

From 1999 - 2004, Sr. Joachim Nwosu was elected as the Superior In charge of the sisters in the United States. During this time, several sisters arrived for mission in Philadelphia, North Carolina, Newark, New Jersey, and Bronx, New York. Following the 2003 Chapter, the USA was divided into four zones, namely New York, Florida, Texas, and Indiana. Our congregation is recognized as a non-profit religious organization in several states in the United States. With the help of God, we have grown and expanded into a force to be reckoned with. We are grateful to God for the many favors we have received from Him as a Congregation and pray that God will continue to bless our apostolic and missionary activities. Amen.
